What is dubbed Centennial Park, on the
\neastern edge of Congress Park, at the intersection
\nof Union Avenue and Circular Street, was
\nofficially opened June 1.<\/p>\n
Marylou Whitney and her husband John
\nHendrickson presided over the opening ceremony.
\nThey donated the money for the park in
\nhonor of Saratoga Springs’ 100th anniversary
\nas a city.<\/p>\n
The park was built by Bonacio Construction
\nand the design was by Mike Ingersoll of The LA
\nGroup. It was commissioned as part of the city’s
\nCentennial celebration.
\nIt features a “Welcome to Saratoga Springs”
\nsign that is carved in black granite, surrounded
\nby South Bay quartzite.<\/p>\n
Referred to as a “pocket park” it features
\nstatue of Storm Cat, as well as ornate landscaping
\nwith fountains. The Storm Cat statue
\nis temporary, until a custom statue of Native
\nDancer is completed and placed in the park.
\nNative Dancer won the Saratoga Special
\nStakes in 1952 and was undefeated at all races
\nin Saratoga and once featured on the cover of
\nTime magazine in 1954. His completed statue
\nwill feature a jockey atop the horse.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
