Saratoga City Center is negotiating a lease on a portion of the present municipal parking lot so it can build a parking structure that will look like this, adding some 500 new spaces\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Some 500 spaces of new parking will soon
\nbe added to downtown Saratoga Springs with
\nconstruction of a multi-level parking structure
\neast of the Saratoga City Center.<\/p>\n

The City Center Authority is negotiating with
\nthe city for a 20-year lease on a portion of the
\npresent municipal parking lot and also negotiating
\ndetails of the building’s “developmental
\ncriteria,” according to Mark Baker, president
\nof the authority. “I am working closely with the city and with my board.”
\nThe financial arrangements with the city
\nwill mirror those for the convention itself,
\nwhich was built on land leased from the city,
\nBaker said.<\/p>\n

“It’s taking a little longer than I anticipated,”
\nhe said, but he still expects construction to
\nbegin by the end of the year and to take about
\neight months to complete.<\/p>\n

Envision Architects is designing the structure.
\nBaker said that it will have a brick facade
\nand “we will try to have it fit into the
\nstreetscape.”<\/p>\n

He expects the parking structure to look
\nmore like an office building than a parking
\ngarage. The parking structure will be separate
\nfrom the City Center building, but connected to
\nit by an enclosed walkway. The plan is to have
\nthe parking facility monitored around the clock
\nby closed circuit television with additional
\nsecurity provided by parking attendants.<\/p>\n

Baker estimates the cost of the addition at
\n$9-10 million. Parking will probably be free for
\nthe first hour or two and, after that, in the range
\nof $10 or $11 a day or overnight.
\n“Just enough to cover the debt load,” Baker
\nsaid. He said that he hopes that, in time, the
\nparking structure will be able to pay for itself.
\nMonthly leases are a possibility, but Baker said
\nthat has not yet been decided.<\/p>\n

Recent renovations and additions to the City
\nCenter have increased the demand for parking
\nin downtown Saratoga Springs. A 2011 project
\nadded two additional meeting facilities to the
\ncenter.<\/p>\n
