The bar was built years ago by former owner Colin MacLean by using banquet tables as a bar top.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cIt was a great idea and it has served us well, but it was time for a change\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">With construction going on around them\u2014including renovations at the neighboring Caffe Lena and construction of apartments at the corner of Phila and Henry streets\u2014the Alexanders decided that the time was right to upgrade their back yard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">They hired long-time customer Matt Geleta to build the bar, past Hattie\u2019s employee Sue Waldron of Sue Waldron Designs to work on the design and Patrick Coffey of IQ contracting as the contractor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><!--more-->\u201cI just wanted a chance to be a part of history.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019ve spent many nights at Hattie\u2019s looking at the bar and knew I could make a beautiful, functional bar,\u201d said Geleta.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Choosing Waldron was easy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cSue worked at Hattie\u2019s for a number of years before leaving to open her own business, Sue Waldron Designs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I had the unique opportunity of working with someone who knows the restaurant business and is an amazing designer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Design elements in the renovation included antique tin ceiling panels used in unique places, liquor decanters, wrought iron and an antique chandelier.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But the biggest change is the tap beer system. \u201cWe had one beer on tap before. Now we have eight,\u201d said Jasper Alexander.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cWe now have the ability to offer a more unique selection of beers to our customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Hattie\u2019s patio bar opens daily at 4 p.m. It opens at 9 a.m. for Saturday and Sunday brunch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The restaurant has achieved national recognition with features in <i>The New York Times<\/i>, <i>Gourmet Magazine<\/i>, <i>Food and Wine<\/i> and other prominent publications. In 2006, Hattie\u2019s was featured on the Food Networks\u2019 \u201cThrowdown!\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>television series with Bobby Flay.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hattie\u2019s Restaurant has finished construction of its renovated patio and re-opened it on May 3.
