In New York, HUD awarded $653 million to housing authorities in the state.<br \/>\nLocally, the Saratoga Housing Authority received $764,749, the Mechanicville Housing Authority received $301,925 and the Glens Falls Housing Authority received $463,186.<br \/>\nThe grants are provided through HUD\u2019s Capital Fund Program, which offers annual funding to approximately 2,900 public housing authorities to build, repair, renovate, and\/or modernize the public housing in their communities. Housing authorities use the funding to complete large-scale improvements such as replacing roofs or making energy-efficient upgrades to replace old plumbing and electrical systems.<!--more--><br \/>\n\u201cFew issues at HUD are more important to me than the repair and preservation of public housing,\u201d said Lynne Patton, HUD regional administrator for New York and New Jersey. \u201cHUD\u2019s Capital Fund Program is essential to the restoration of affordable housing because it provides resources to ensure low-income residents live in healthy, safe and sanitary homes.\u201d<br \/>\nTo help provide residents with decent, safe and sanitary housing and respond to the growing demand for affordable rental housing, HUD uses the Rental Assistance Demonstration (RAD), a comprehensive strategy that complements the Capital Fund Program.
