At Heidi Owen West\u2019s newest clothing shop, everything is on sale.<\/p>\n

Owen West is the entrepreneur whose LLC owns three clothing shops on Broadway: Lifestyles of Saratoga, Caroline + Main and Union Hall Supply Company, the latter a men\u2019s store with two other locations in the Albany area. Her latest concept is The Sale Room, which retails discounted merchandise from her other stores.<\/p>\n

Eliminating sale racks from retail shops frees space, turns over merchandise more quickly and allows staff to focus on what\u2019s current, said Owen West, a Fashion Institute of Technology graduate.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s shoppers have changed greatly over the 35 years she has shaped her clientele. She said what used to be about selling product is now about selling an environment and \u201ccreating those moments that people want to be a part of.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey want to be wowed, they want an experience,\u201d she said. \u201cMy philosophy is to create places where customers can come in and feel something.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/span><\/span>Whether at a crowded retail store or online, people today can easily become overwhelmed, Owen West said. But shoppers trust that the brick-and-mortar stores at 436, 438 and 437 Broadway will provide \u201cedited, quality\u201d clothing presented in \u201ca warm, historic environment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople want to know who made the clothes, where they came from, and why they were made,\u201d she said. \u201cThey trust that I\u2019m bringing them meaningful products, such as small mak-ers and story driven brands.\u201d<\/p>\n

The clothing at Lifestyles of Saratoga is curated to be \u201cwell made, sustainable, and more seri-ous,\u201d whereas customers at Caroline + Main seek \u201cmore fun and colorful, contemporary, and lower priced\u201d items, she said.<\/p>\n

Building in-store client relationships is a goal for Owen West and a driver of her success as a small business.<\/p>\n

\u201cCustomers feel seen with us and products are a part of that, but we differentiate and com-pete on the experience and the connection we make,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Owen West searches clothing and accessories markets and makes selections with her cus-tomers\u2019 styles and needs in mind.<\/p>\n

\u201cI buy for the client because I see what sells and I listen to them, so I know right when I see it which shops will carry the merchandise,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are part of the fabric and the rhythm of Saratoga, and we know the people,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd we\u2019re human. You can\u2019t algorithm your way into doing what we do in the store.\u201d<\/p>\n

She has a well-trained team, including people who can personally style a customer if needed. There can be 30 to 40 staff members among four stores depending on the time of year, she said.<\/p>\n

Like many employers, Owen West said she finds it challenging to \u201cmake sure we have the right person in the right seat at the right time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt took me many years to realize that is something that needs to be done constantly,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Another challenge is staying fresh, relevant and forward-thinking, but she said \u201csifting over merchandise and narrowing it down is my secret super power.\u201d<\/p>\n

Owen West said Saratoga shoppers understand how thriving small businesses factor into the quality of life for the community and that starting a new business in a changing environment \u201ccan be a learning process.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut then, entrepreneurs thrive on challenge,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The Sale Room is in a separate leased space behind Union Hall Supply Company at 437 Broadway and is accessible from the adjoining alleyway. Opening is slated for late spring 2026.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis new concept is a way to stay fluid in business by turning over merchandise on the main floors as often as we possibly can to focus on new arrivals,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

As goods from her Saratoga stores are relocated to The Sale Room, it will be easier for people to save, Owen West said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have customers who only shop our deals, and we are okay with that,\u201d she said. \u201cThink of The Sale Room like an outlet location, which most of the major clothing stores have, but in a small business way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Once the new venture is running on Broadway, Owen West will ensure all her stores live up to the messaging she has put out and the value she has promised the community, she said.<\/p>\n

Owen West is a longtime business owner, vice president of Saratoga\u2019s downtown business as-sociation and \u201ca proponent of small businesses in the community and in the world.\u201d But she said she is \u201cworried because it is now so much harder to do\u201d what shop owners did in prior decades, for many reasons.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the competition, it\u2019s financial, finding staff, and the work and energy, that it\u2019s harder to break through the noise,\u201d she said. \u201cEspecially as a new business, one big hit can pull it down.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTariffs, shipping costs, rents, and other expenses are skyrocketing, and we can\u2019t absorb them like big businesses can,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I like to say that if we got through COVID, there is nothing we can\u2019t get through as a small business community.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Owen West cuts the ribbon at her newest store, she will reflect on her first and only busi-ness partner, her mother, Kay Owen. Together they opened Lifestyles of Saratoga in 1991.<\/p>\n
