There are some great events lined up for this week in Saratoga! A chance to chat with the voice of the race track, some Shakespeare in the park, the Finest Fillies in the city, a poetry and fiction reading, and some Blues, Brews and BBQ! Line up your sitter and plan out your week!
1. Today, Monday July 23rd catch Saratoga’s Racing Legends: A Conversation with Tom Durkin at the Saratoga Springs Public Library. From 7-9pm in the Dutcher Community Room come meet and hear “The Voice of NYRA” when veteran sports journalist Mike Kane has a conversation with renowned race track announcer Tom Durkin who has been bringing his special brand of excitement to race track fans at Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park, and Saratoga Race Course since 1990. 2. Pack a picnic and a blanket and head to Congress Park for the Sarataoga Shakespeare Co. production of Twelfth Night. Admission is free and the performance starts at 6pm. Saratoga’s professional theater company celebrates twelve years in the park with this rollicking comedy on The Alfred Z. Solomon Stage. Directed by William A.Finlay. 3. On Thursday, July 26th you won’t want to miss the Party for A Cause/Jake’s Help From Heaven Fundraiser at Vapor Nightclub starting at 7pm. Saratoga’s Finest Fillies (Julie Johnson, Heather Straughter, Johanna Friedman, Susan Halstead, Kelly Hite, Amy Raimo, Elaine Sillery, Christianne Smith and Melissa Zieker) will be competing to get to the finish line first as they take over the dance floor and make it VAPOR RACE COURSE! Guests will be able to place $10 bets on the filly of their choice (or you can increase their odds of winning and bet on more than one filly!) For every $10 bet that is placed, guests will also get a raffle ticket to be placed in the box representing the filly of their choice. Prizes will be drawn for Win, Place and Show finishes! Tickets are $50/person and include yummy buffets, decadent desserts and a chance to play the most unique game of the summer! 4. Also on Thursday will be a fiction and poetry reading as part of the New York State Summer Writers Institute at Skidmore College. Head to the Davis Auditorium at 8pm to hear Rick Moody (fictionist, Demonology) and Francine Prose (novelist, A Changed Man). The New York State Summer Writers Institute enters the second half of its 26th season at Skidmore with continued emphasis on curricular excellence during the daytime hours and a rich schedule of readings by guest authors in the evenings. Admission is free.
5. On Friday, July 27th head to Blues, Brews, and BBQ at the National Museum of Dance starting at 8pm. You can support a great cause and have fun at the same time! This fundraiser supports children’s art programming at the National Museum of Dance and you won’t want to miss it! Toe tappin’ music will be played by: Blues Noir, Tristan Chase, and others! $55 gets you all of the above, plus an open bar (of beer & wine), wine provided by Kenwood Vineyards. Get your tickets soon–the price will be $65 at the door! Go home and mark your calendars! The BBQ will be made by PJs BAR-B-QSA and there will be craft beer tastings from Saratoga Brewery.
