In the 144-year history of the Saratoga Race Course, no jockey has ever won more than six races on a single card. That record was set in September of 2001, by Jockey John Velazquez. This past Sunday however, Ramon Dominguez tied this record by winning six races!
Dominguez had a busy day prior to racing and winning at Saratoga on Sunday: he rode in stakes races at Saratoga, as well as Delaware Park and Colonial Dawns in Virginia! But, his exhaustive schedule didn’t stop him from taking first place six separate times!
“Coming into today, I looked at the program and was very excited about my chances,” said Dominguez. “We all know luck is a big factor. Everything clicked into place.”
Winning six races isn’t just a record at Saratoga though, it’s a record at all the other NYRA tracks! Last year, Dominguez was the first jockey since 1981 to win six races at Belmont, and now he’s tied for holding the Saratoga record as well.
Congratulations to Dominguez! With this exciting news, the Saratoga Racing Season is off to an exciting start!
