The fourth annual ‘Go Green’ Build event is taking place at the Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa, New York. The event pairs partners Kohl’s Department Stores and Chip’s Landscaping, to create a sustainable and ‘green’ water garden at Saratoga County Historical Society, Brookside Museum. This year’s event is special, as the project will create a sustainable environment at Brookside, and also will give the museum an educational platform to further learning opportunities for visitors!
The Brookside Museum is the home of the Saratoga County Historical Society (SCHS), which catalogues and brings to life the story of Saratoga County. SCHS is vital to the growth of our community because it unifies and strengthens communal bonds, fosters exploration and discovery about shared heritage, exercises imaginations, and provides inspiration for societal growth.
The water garden will create a sustainable ecosystem to serve as an outdoor history-learning lab, to supplement existing outdoor programming. The new water garden will compliment the historical nature of the grounds. The water feature will be able to capture and reuse over 34,000 gallons of rainwater! This water will also be used to irrigate source the perimeter gardens. The gardens will feature native plantings, “nativores” and infusion of historical artifacts within.
The build will last from 8am- 5pm on Saturday April 20th, 2013; where volunteers can help build the pond by digging, moving materials, filling the pond, planting materials, etc. At the end of the day, there will be an unveiling of the pond for guests, the media, and visitors.
There will also be exhibits taking place throughout the day, and the museum shop will be open as well. This event is free to the public and family friendly!
