The tagline for Pin Up’s Blow Bar is “No cuts. No color. Wash. Blow. Style & Go,” which succinctly captures what this business is about. The gorgeous beauty bar is home to those looking for makeup, blowouts and hairstyles for a day of looking fabulous.
The floor-to-ceiling windows let passersby peek into the pink Old Hollywood Glam beauty bar inside. Well-coifed and fashionable girls work on their clients in one big room, complete with a beauty bar, makeup section and a hair-washing station. Varga girls and girly girls are at home here, where even the female bathroom sign has been altered with a big pink bow.
Marilyn Ponce and her boyfriend (the owner of Vinny’s Barbershop) put their heads together to come up with the idea for Pin Up’s.
“We travel a lot to NYC and have seen these blow bars all over the place,” said Ponce. “I tried them out before I would go out and loved the concept.”
Ponce, who worked as a cosmetologist and a stylist for men and women on her own, knew that if she worked in a salon it would have to be her own. Luckily, with the help of her boyfriend’s successful business acumen, they were able to bring the NYC idea to a prime piece of real estate in Saratoga Springs at 57 Railroad Place, across the street from Spot Coffee.
“We love Saratoga! There is so many people as well as events going on in this area, so what better place to have a shop where people can come in before they go out,” says Ponce about their location.
The interior of the shop was designed by Ponce herself, a Marilyn Monroe fan who wanted to make the shop look like a glamourous dressing room.
“I tried to design the shop to fit all ages but keep it very classic! It has a Old Hollywood look with a modern twist.”
Everything in the store is custom and some are antique items from the 1920s.
“We play Ella Fitzgerald during the day and fun dance music at night. We have blow dryers that hang from the ceiling and all the decor was pretty much hand made.”
All the Pin Up girls in their pink aprons are trained to make every guest feel at home, and you can catch most of them catching up with clients on the streets. And as a blow out bar, the season never ends (although prom and track season had them busy for awhile).
“You can get a blow out more then once a week if you want. We have our regulars that come in just so they don’t have to wash their own hair.”
And judging by the inside on most days, Pin Up’s has lots of regular clients. They also do fundraisers and are very highly involved in charity events. On October 13 Pin Up’s will be doing a fashion show for The Northeast Kidney Foundation (they raised money for the same foundation the weekend they opened). On October 27 they are doing the wedding expo at the Times Union Center. And as for a grand opening party?
“We are in the process of planning it but I want to do it very glamorous so it takes some time but everyone will have to keep a look out for that. I’m thinking a Pink Carpet! Its gonna be awesome!”
There are six blow outs to choose from (the most popular is Sweet Caroline, which gives sexy loose curls with a lot of body) at Pin Up’s. Besides blow outs and makeup, Pin Up’s features kid’s hairstyling and hair and scalp treatments. Blowouts are $40 (Tuesdays and Wednesdays are $30), makeup application is $45 and eye makeup only is $25. Packages include private parties for $200/hr, bridal up-styles for $60 and up, and an Ultimate Package for $150 that includes shampoo, blow-dry, up-do, makeup and lash strips.
