Summer concerts and classical performances on the lawn at SPAC are a Saratoga staple. However, this past year, some concert goers noted that there was not much “lawn” left to the outside of the amphitheater. From all the dancing over the years, the luscious green grass that once spanned the lawn needed some work.
SPAC is currently laying sod over approximately 75,000-square feet of the lawn to prep for its 50th Anniversary Season in 2016! Take a look:
The decision to lay sod comes after a yearlong lawn restoration project beginning in 2014. Through soil tests, consultations and a partnership with the Spa State Park, the determination was made that sod is the best option for a sustainable lawn restoration program at an outdoor seasonal venue in the area.
During the 2014 season, SPAC took steps to improve the waning condition of the lawn. The program began last fall, with soil tests that led to a determination to implement three programs: an adjustment to the grading of the lawn’s slope for improved water drainage, a re-seeding of the lawn using a resilient hybrid grass seed and the purchase of an Evergreen Blanket.
While the lawn was in good shape at the start of the 2015, the grass experienced degradation during July due to the long winter and severe spring rains. After recognizing that the seeding could not provide sustainable growth, SPAC’s Facilities Committee chose to implement sodding.
Marcia J. White, President and Executive Director of SPAC, stated in a press release, “Unfortunately, mother nature has intervened in recent years with very cold winters and heavy spring rains, weakening the root structure of our grass and rendering impossible to prevent the degradation of our lawn during our summer season. In addition, although our sloping lawn is beloved by our audiences for providing visibility into our amphitheater, the decline actually enables grass to wash away during heavy rains. We hope that our new sod will result in lush lawn seating for our audiences as they enjoy unforgettable performances next season, SPAC’s 50th Anniversary Celebration.”
We’re looking forward to seeing the new and improved lawn for the 2016 Anniversary Season at the best outdoor music venue in the country!
