Saratoga Leaf Peepers, Enjoy Views at Spruce Mountain's Renovated Fire Tower & Trail

Great news for leaf peepers in the Saratoga area! Spruce Mountain’s rehabilitated fire tower and new trail in Corinth are now open for public use and you have until October 24th to take advantage of the spectacular views of the fall foliage!

From the top of the five and a half story fire tower on Spruce Mountain, visitors can enjoy views of Vermont, Gore Mountain and the southern Adirondacks. The 2.4 mile round-trip trail travels through gentle terrain with an elevation change of around 1,000 feet.

Saratoga PLAN Executive Director, Maria Trabka, stated in a press release, “We are thrilled to see Spruce Moutain and its fire tower reopened to the public thanks to the hard work and dedication of many partners over the years. Not only does this mountain serve as a local favorite for hiking, but its views of Saratoga County from atop remind us all of how beautiful and special this region truly is.”

New York State’s Environmental Protection fund (EPF) provided $25,000 in support of the work on Spruce Mountain through a trail maintenance agreement with the Adirondack Mountain Club and a conservation stewardship agreement with the Student Conservation Association.

In a press release, Assemblyman Dan Stec said, “As an avid hiker, I’ve climbed all the fire tower mountains in the Adirondacks. Years ago, I climbed a rough trail to Spruce’s closed tower with no views. Last week, my son and I climbed a great new trail to a refurbished firer tower that provides great views of the Southern Adirondacks. Recreational infrastructure improvements like this project are great not only for our residents’ quality of life but also brings visitors to our community which is good for local businesses.”

The Spruce Mountain trailhead and parking area is located at the end of Fire Tower Road in South Corinth. To get there from Saratoga Springs, head west on Lake Avenue towards Broadway. Continue onto NY-9N, take a slight left onto Chapman Street and another turn left onto Miner Road. From there, turn right onto Spruce Mountain Road and the take a slight left onto Spruce Mountain Tower Road, Fire Tower Road will be on your right after approximately .8 miles.

If you plan to take advantage of the unparalleled views of the leaves, this is the week to do it! The trail and tower will be closed for six weeks during hunting season, which will begin on Saturday, October 24th. The trail will reopen in December and stay open for the remainder of the year.
