Skidmore College has announced that Oprah will be giving the 2017 commencement address on May 20! The popular TV personality and philanthropist will also be honored with an Honorary Doctorate of Letters in the Arts.
This is not Oprah’s first visit to Saratoga Springs. Back in 2013 Oprah visited Saratoga Springs and ate at the Crown Grill while making a surprise visit to Skidmore to tape a television segment with two graduates of her Leadership Academy. It looks like the Crown Grill will change hands and become the Braeburn Tavern by the time Oprah returns to Saratoga in May, but I’m sure we can all agree that there are plenty of great restaurants in Saratoga Springs for the media magnate to choose from.
The college will also be recognizing the achievements of philanthropist Ann Tisch and author Wes Moore during commencement exercises. Tisch founded the Young Women’s Leadership Network and the college will be recognizing her achievements in helping underserved young women gain access to quality education. Tisch also established the CollegeBound Initiative to place full-time college counselors in public schools.
Moore is the best-selling author of “The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates.” He is a combat veteran and entrepreneur who focuses on youth advocacy, including founding the BridgeEdU first-year college program.
