Mark your calendar for this Saturday, June 10th – the annual Flag Day Parade organized by the Saratoga-Wilton Elks Lodge #161 is turning 50! In honor of this significant milestone, the upcoming parade is expected to be one of the biggest and best in the history of Flag Day parades.
For its 50th installment, the Flag Day Parade will recognize another organization celebrating a major anniversary: the New York State Police is now in its 100th year! Major General (retired) Michael R. Van Patten, New York Army National Guard, will serve as Grand Marshall, and he will be joined in leading the parade by Elk members who helped start this tradition five decades ago.
Parade-goers can expect to see area high school and local bands, chorus groups, girl scouts, boy scouts, sports groups, local organizations, and more join in the celebration. Honorary Grand Marshalls consisting of Elks members from 50 years ago, who contributed to the start of this tradition, will be helping Van Patten to lead the parade.
The parade is sponsored by the Saratoga Casino Hotel and Raceway, the Saratoga Harness Horsepersons Association, and the Saratoga Springs Police Benevolent Association (PBA). These sponsorships have allowed the Elks to include the Mummers from Philadelphia and the Schenectady Pipe Band in the parade lineup.
The Flag Day Parade is on Saturday, June 10th, and will begin at noon on North Broadway in Saratoga; the parade will end at Congress Park.
