Fair food: it’s an integral part of the fair experience, just as important as the rides, games, and everything else fair-goers come to relish in at this quintessential summer event. And, no one does fair food better than the Saratoga County Fair, which is running through Sunday, July 29th.
We headed to the fair and selected seven enticing items to try – read on to find out what you’ll want to look for when you get to the Fair, and check out the video:
1) Bloomin’ Onion
The fair food that is perfect for sharing: the bloomin’ onion! This deep fried treat goes by many names: bloomin’ onion, blooming onion, onion blossom, onion flower – but regardless of what you call it, it’s out of this world delicious.
Although a few dips were available, we opted for the Ranch, which had just a little bit of a kick to it and was an excellent complement to the crispy onion.
2) Deep Fried Snickers
Speaking of deep fried fair food, we simply could not resist trying out the deep fried Snickers. The classic candy bar is wrapped with a crispy fried batter and coated with a generous helping of powdered sugar. The Snickers is just starting to melt, so you get a combination of the warm, gooey candy bar and crisp outer coating with the dusting of sugar – perfection!
The Fair also offers deep fried Reese’s, deep fried Twix, and more deep fried concoctions that you really can only experience at the Fair.
3) Steak Sandwich
Fried food is wonderful, but you might need some real sustenance to prepare you for all the other action going on at the fair. We opted for the steak sandwich, with the steak sliced right in front of us and topped with peppers, onions, and nacho cheese.
The choice of nacho cheese, as compared to simple sliced or shredded cheese, really put this one over the top as far as classic fair food goes. And, they did not skimp on any of the ingredients – as you can see, the sandwich is pretty much overflowing.
4) Chocolate Chip Cookies
This next fair treat is excellent for kids if you’re bringing the whole family to the fair, but no one would blame you if you snuck one or two for yourself! Brand new to the Saratoga County Fair this year they have freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. They’re served in cups, and they really stuff the cup with as many cookies as it can possibly hold.
If you enjoy soft chocolate chip cookies where the chocolate chips are just about starting to melt in the summer heat, this is the fair food for you.
5) Bratwurst
Like the steak sandwich, bratwurst is another fair food option to go for if you’re looking for some solid lunch or dinner food and not just a sweet treat. This no nonsense bratwurst sandwich came with a little sauerkraut, and nothing else was needed – it’s excellent without any extra bells and whistles!
Bratwurst is a type of German sausage that has a really great flavor you can just sink your teeth into.
6) Fried Dough
Ah, fried dough. What fair experience would be complete without it? Fried dough is one of those things that people look for at the fair year after year. It’s nice to switch things up with new foods to try, but this staple must always stay in the rotation.
The crispy dough was fried to perfection, and you get to put the powdered sugar on yourself! Keep it simple with a small dusting, or go nuts and completely coat the treat with sugar. Why not? You’re at the Fair!
7) Root Beer Float
Food is never complete without a beverage to go with it. The Fair offers old fashioned root beer floats with vanilla ice cream that you can sip through a straw or dig into with a spoon. There is just something about root beer floats that evokes a sense of nostalgia and simpler times.
The Fair also has fresh lemonade and other delicious beverages, plus they have a beer that is brewed just for the Fair that you might also want to check out!
