“All Disease Begins in the Gut”?
Over 2000 years ago, Hippocrates proclaimed, “All disease begins in the gut.”
Today, many modern integrative, naturopathic, and functional medicine physicians fervently echo his words. Was he (and are they) correct?
Digestive Health and Whole-Body Support
The gastrointestinal tract is known for its roles in digestion, assimilation, and absorption of nutrients, but did you know that it has many other functions? These include:
- assisting with the elimination of toxins and waste
- housing over 70% of our immune cells
- manufacturing 90% of our serotonin
- producing various neurochemicals
- regulating hormone excretion
- providing feedback to our brain through the gut-brain axis
- influencing the liver, thyroid, lungs, immune system, skin, and various organs via bi-directional feedback (the gut-brain-organ axes)
The Trillions of Teeny Microbes Impacting Our Gut and Overall Health
Much of the physiological processes of our gut are fueled by a proportion of the trillions of tiny microbes (microbiota) residing inside and outside our bodies. In fact, our GI tract is home to 1014 cells of thousands of different species of microbiota.
Only recently has it been discovered that the gut microbiome (the collection of all of the microbiota and their genetic profiles) has a connection to almost every aspect of health. Therefore, we have to have an optimal functioning gastrointestinal tract to really achieve lasting wellness.
As a result, now even conventional medicine is starting to proclaim that Hippocrates’ statement has validity!
