The Month of the Heart in Saratoga, NY
The second month of the year is often associated with our hearts. One reason is that Valentine’s Day falls on February 14th. Saratoga, NY offers many events to honor the “month of love.” These celebratory heart happenings in Saratoga spotlight how this emotion and its companion organ can evoke happiness and healing. (You can find them all here.)
This month also shines a light on the importance of caring for our beloved organ, having been designated “American Heart Month” by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1963 (via Proclamation 3566). This connection between a secular holiday focused on love and heart health awareness is significant, even if unintended. Research shows that strong relationships can help to lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and buffer the heart from negative triggers.
Modern Medicine is Failing Our Hearts
Unfortunately, a day to promote gratitude for those we care about and having the full month to focus on heart health hasn’t improved our nation’s outcomes. Despite the goal of our late President’s decree, cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death in the United States. In fact, heart disease is killing one person every 34 seconds. Clearly, a new approach to cardiovascular treatment is needed.
Drugs, supplements, and lifestyle interventions are often the main modalities for promoting heart health in conventional and integrative medicine. Yet, relationships, socioeconomics, and emotions are as essential for optimal cardiovascular function. For example, loneliness and isolation are substantial risk factors associated with cardiovascular mortality. Additionally, mental health is also linked to heart disease risk.
