Horses, Pets, and Saratoga, NY
Animal lovers exist everywhere, but when you think of horses, Saratoga, NY is one place that will likely first come to your mind. Home to the famous Saratoga Race Course, the popularity of “track season” is evident by the jammed traffic flow on Route 87 into Saratoga Springs during the summer.
However, the warmest month isn’t the only season in Saratoga, NY for horse lovers to gather and gush over their shared animal obsession. Thanks to Old Friends of Cabin Creek, which offers a dignified retirement to these beloved racehorses, events, tours, and parties to celebrate your favorite Thoroughbred are ongoing in this historical hotspot.
Still, it’s not just horses Saratogians are devoted to. It’s a rare day to walk down the historical Broadway district and not spot a furry friend with its’ pet parents nearby.
Yet did you know our love for animals isn’t just a feel-good-feeling that encourages us to adore them and properly take care of them? Our furry family members are actually beneficial for our health!
The Healing Power of Pets
Pets are a vital part of their owner’s life, offering both companionship and emotional support. Many pet owners will not be surprised to learn that their love for their furry companion is reciprocated in ways that enhance their own wellbeing. The National Institute of Health (NIH) reports that interacting with animals:
- Decreases stress hormone levels
- Lowers blood pressure
- Reduces loneliness
- Offers social support
- Boosts mood
Animals also offer other indirect advantages. These include boosting our mindfulness for being present in the moment, increasing our physical activity (due to the need for our pets to play and take walks), and sharpening our awareness of our environment.
Isn’t it nice to know how our relationships with our pets are so mutually advantageous? Celebrating this by offering them delicious treats from the various pet stores around Saratoga just seems appropriate now, right?
