We often think about supporting our well-being through what we eat, how we move, and how we manage stress.
In fact, in this series, weāve already explored nutrition, movement, and mindset as key foundations for brain health.
And those things are crucial.
But thereās another layer influencing how we feel and think every single day, often without us even realizing it.
š What weāre breathing in.
Whether you’re strolling down Broadway, unwinding in Congress Park, or simply trying to reset at home after a full Saratoga day, you’re constantly taking in your environment through scent. While smells might seem subtle, they are one of the most impactful ways your environment shapes how your brain responds.
This isnāt just perceptualāitās physiological.
Olfaction is directly connected to the brainās memory, mood, and stress response areas. From a naturopathic and functional medicine perspective, this means what we smell is deeply interconnected with nervous system regulation in real time.
For this reason, essential oils and olfactory stimulation are some of my most favored and effective tools to enhance emotional balance, resilience, and brain health with my clients.
šæ The Overlooked Impact of Your Environment
Most of us donāt think twice about everyday scent exposuresācandles, cleaning products, perfumes, or the air quality in our homes and outdoor spaces. However, as a naturopathic and functional medicine doctor, these inputs arenāt viewed as neutral stimuli.
They can either:
- Support how our brain and nervous system function
- Add to the overall stress load on the body
Synthetic fragrances often lead to sensory overload, resulting in brain fog and fatigue. Furthermore, their chemicals and endocrine disrupting compounds increase our toxic body burden and contribute to disease processes.
On the other hand, nature and the volatile compounds that are emitted by trees and plants enhance our resiliency. They aid in revitalizing us, supporting our immune system, and boosting our mental clarity. This is why many people go to nature to āresetā from everyday struggles.
Therefore, everything coming in through our noses has an impact on how our brain and body responds. This means we should prioritize natural scents and aromas from plants and essential oils to enhance our body and brain vitality.
š§ Why Smell Matters to Your Brain More Than You Think
Out of all the senses, smell has a uniquely close relationship with the brain.
It is the only sense that doesnāt require a ārelayā station in the thalamus for interpretation. Instead, it immediately links to areas involved in:
- Memory (hypothalamus)
- Emotions (limbic system)
- Stress responses
This is why a scent can instantly shift your mood or bring you back to a specific moment in time.
This means the scents youāre exposed to daily are quietly shaping how your body responds and adapts.
šø A More Intentional Approach to Scent
What your breathing can be a transformational way to change your brain function.
Along with considering what chemical fragrances to remove, we can also think about what to add in to support the system.
For example, we can choose cleaner, more natural products that are free of harmful ingredients and we can create simple scent rituals throughout the day
And one of my favorite tools for this?
šæ Essential oils.
šæ Essential Oils as a Bridge Between Environment and Physiology
In my practice, essential oils are not just something that āsmells good and are relaxing.ā
Theyāre a way to influence both:
- The chemistry of the body
- The signaling to the brain
They can be used to support a calmer, regulated nervous system, balanced emotions, and a sense of grounding during stressful moments.
And they do this in a way that works with the body to address underlying imbalances. For example, essential oils are naturally anti-inflammatory, support our microbiome, are neuroprotective, regulate hormones and neurotransmitters, and act as antioxidants (cellular protectors.)
šæ Enhance Your Senses in Saratoga
One of the most beautiful parts of living ināor visitingāSaratoga is how naturally the environment engages your senses when you slow down enough to notice it.
If we think about brain health through a sensory lens, this becomes more than just a wellness conceptāit becomes something you can actually experience in real life.
Simple ways to engage your senses here include:
š³ Time in nature and green spaces
Congress Park tours or walking through Saratoga State Spa Park offer a natural reset for the nervous system. The combination of fresh air, movement, sound, and natural scent exposure can help shift the brain out of overstimulation and back into regulation.
š Walking and gentle movement outdoors
A simple walk along Broadway allows for rhythmic movement + sensory input that supports mental clarity and mood balance as your engaging with the Saratoga community.
šø Seasonal Saratoga experiences
With the changing seasons, comes new offerings of community events and outdoor gatherings. In this way, Saratoga naturally invites more presenceāsomething the brain thrives on for enjoyment and stress recovery.
š Noticing natural scent environments
Whether itās fresh air after rain, pine trees in the park, or floral notes in spring and summer, these natural scent exposures are meaningful inputs for your sensory system as you partake in your chosen activity.
šæ Supporting your senses with essential oils
You can also intentionally extend this oflactory support beyond your environment by incorporating essential oils into your daily routine. Whether used during a walk, as part of a grounding ritual at home, or simply to shift your nervous system state, essential oils can act as a bridge between external experience and internal regulationāsupporting calm, clarity, and emotional balance.
