In 2014, Student Conservation Association (SCA) Adirondack members began restoring the 5 1/2 story fire tower on Spruce Mountain. The DEC took over the project this year, and recently announced that the fire tower is now open, and the public can enjoy views of Vermont, Gore Mountain, and the Southern Adirondacks from the top.
The Adirondack Mountain Club Professional Trail Crew also finished a re-route of the trail leading to the tower from private land onto Wilcox Lake Wild Forest and then onto Saratoga Preserving Land and Nature (PLAN) property. The 2.4-mile round-trip trail is also now open for public use.
Other fire tower restorations have been recently completed, with more underway in the Adirondacks. The 35-foot tower atop Lyon Mountain has been re-opened, while work on the St. Regis and Hurricane Mountain towers will continue next year.
