For those who love to bet the horses, some bad news. I just read from the TU that harness racing has been suspended at Saratoga Casino and Raceway until April 11th. Apparently some of the horses have fallen ill with a disease known as “Strangles,” which sounds scarier than it actually is. It’s kind of like a horse cold.
According to the Times Union article, four horses were diagnosed with Strangles, which is an acute respiratory infection that causes fever, lethargy, runny nose and swollen lymph nodes.
As a precaution, the infected horses are being moved to quarantine, and Saratoga Casino and Raceway is trying to keep any horses from entering or leaving the facility as the disease is contagious. They have a total of 450 horses stabled there.
Harness racing is expected to resume at Saratoga Casino and Raceway on April 11, and there is talk of possibly making up for these lost days in the fall.
This is very sad. I hope the sick horses feel better soon!
