Earlier this month, a nonprofit organization submitted an application to change the zoning designation of a 9.7 acre parcel on the corner of Route 67 and State Farm Boulevard in Malta. If the change is approved and funds can be raised, the town may be home to one of the region’s finest aquatic centers in the very near future.

The nonprofit is called Adirondack Aquatic Center, and according to The Times Union, it “wants to build a 61,000-square-foot facility bearing its name” that will include “three indoor pools, an indoor diving well, and an outdoor pool for warm months,” along with “classrooms, meeting areas, and locker rooms.”
The project was conceived by Kara Haraden, Laura Davis, Tara Sullivan, and Sara Gregory, who are all highly experienced in the sport of swimming. They envision Adirondack Aquatic Center as being the perfect host for swim classes, competitive swimming and diving meets, aquatic therapy sessions, master classes, and more.
Funds are expected to be raised through a combination of grants, loans, and donations. If fundraising is successful and necessary approvals are obtained, the nonprofit hopes to break ground on the center in 2016.
