1) Vina Lauria – Fontane Bianche, 2014 ($16.99)
Pitted apricot, slivered almonds, white floral tones, pear, salinity, and abundant minerality highlight both the nose and the palate in this Cataratto/Zibibo blend from the island of Sicily.
This wine has great weight and texture, along with beautiful acidity. This wine will open your eyes to what Italian whites are capable of!
2) Domaine Pepiere Muscadet, 2015 ($14.99)
Though this wine is without a doubt mineral driven, this offering from Marc Olliver is showing lots of fruit. Medium plus intensity with notes of dried pear, citrus peel, white pepper, lemon curd, and crushed stone. The medium plus acidity is mouth-watering and the sur lie aging has given this wine a beautiful rounded mouthfeel.
The palate is contiguous with the aromatic profile and closes with a refreshing note of seashell salinity on the lengthy finish. Pepiere is a rock star! One of the best values in the world of wine! Oysters, anyone?!
3) Santo Santorini Assyritiko, 2014 ($15.99)
Shiny and yellowish, make a unique statement with its varietal character, which embraces white flowers, citrus fruits aromas, and intense minerality. Vivid, with full, well balanced body and distinctive long after taste.
4) Geil Scheurebe Kabinett, 2013 ($15.99)
Scheurebe is actually a crossing of Riesling and Bukettrebe, and Geil’s example from the Rheinhessen is textbook! Off dry in style, the aromatic and palate profile show intense notes of pink grapefruit and honeysuckle. There’s also subtle notes of spice, along with a slight prickle on the palate (almost reminiscent of Vinho Verde).
Altogether, this would be an excellent wine for those looking to branch out from Sauvignon Blanc and add a slight dose of residual sugar. Mouthwatering acidity keeps you coming back for more. A true hidden gem!
5) Buglioni, Disperato, 2014 ($17.99)
Straw yellow color with a golden shimmer. Intense aromas, rich with notes of flowers and tropical fruit, especially mango and pineapple. Good structure and acidity.
Round in the mouth, savory, and balanced. Besides being a pleasant apéritif, its full flavor pairs well with refined meat and fish appetizers, crudités, aromatic pasta or rice dishes, grilled white meat, or fish.
6) Pine Ridge, 2014 ($11.99)
A consistent, big-time winner in the value sweepstakes, the 2014 Chenin Blanc/Viognier is a blend of 80% Chenin Blanc and 20% Viognier is aged totally in stainless steel, has malolactic blocked, and offers what consumers love – big, flowery, fresh honeysuckle and tropical fruit, a light to medium-bodied mouthfeel, beautiful purity, texture, and a long finish. Drink it over the next year.
7) Boundary Breaks, OLN, Riesling, 2014 ($15.99)
A pert, high-toned, and rocky wine the 2014 “OLN” from Boundary Breaks is still quite young and wound-up. The nose offers scents of honeycomb, wax, and white peach.
In the mouth, it is vertical and a bit shy. That said, there is certain weight to the core, it is just currently bound up in the acid. Some time should relax this wine and unveil its certain beauty. There are 33 grams per liter of residual sugar.
