ZENYATTA, 2010 Horse of the Year, will be bred to BERNARDINI for her first mating. Bernardini was the 2006 Champion 3-year-old and is 2010’s leading freshman sire by numbers of stakes winners. The $75,000 stud fee is not necessarily on the high end … STORM CAT set the stud fee bar at $500,000. The fee is paid the moment the foal stands on its legs for the first time.
Watching the horrific events in Egypt, have you noticed that some Egyptians are riding their horses into the crowd of demonstrators in Cairo? They appear to be pro-government supporters but nonetheless the riders are bareback and using whips (not crops) as they charge into the crowds. From a distance these horses appear to be more suited to recreational riding or perhaps as draft animals and probably cannot be confused with Egyptian Arabians. You’ll also see some camels joining in the melee … anyone who has dealt with a camel knows their bite is terrifically painful. Whip or camel bite … neither is the way to deal with peaceful demonstrators.
What are the conditions under which locally-owned horses are being sheltered during these days of snow and nights of bitter cold? Are your horses safe and secure? Are your neighbor’s horses out of the weather? If you suspect that you know of a horse (or horses) that are not in a warm and sheltered environment you are obligated to call your local law enforcement station. Cruelty to any animal is always contemptible and neglecting them in weather extremes is even more so. We are all in some way responsible for all creatures, even if they are not our own.
