The Red Cross keeps calling me. I have a very rare blood type
and they always seem to need it. By law in New York State blood
donors are eligible to donate blood every 56 days.
I started donating blood about 10 years ago when I was living in San Francisco.
I wanted to do something but didnt have time to volunteer so I decided that donating my blood that only 2% of the population has seemed like a noble thing to do.
I used to donate four and five times a year and I felt good about doing it.
Then something changed.I wondered who was getting my blood or if they even used it. Sometimes I would show up to donate and I wouldn’t have to wait and other times I would be sitting there for a hour and a half. Some of the employees at the Red Cross would reek of cigarette smoke and I did complain about it. One time I asked for a female attendant and was given a male one.
It got to a point where I didn’t feel like they wanted my blood badly enough.
It was like being in a relationship with a boyfriend who seemed to take me for granted and only seemed interested in me when he knew I was about to walk out the door.
The Red Cross just called me a few minutes ago and they want me to come donate at the Gideon Putnam next week. I’m not sure if I will show up. I think they should consider wooing me a little bit, seduce me into becoming a regular donor again. Treating me to dinner might be nice and sending me a bouquet of flowers might actually win me back.
