Shakes (or smoothies) are a staple in my diet all year long but especially when the temperature rises. I change them seasonally using fresh, local fruits & veggies and also by adding different spices, rolled oats, etc. No shake has ever come out the same in my kitchen but nevertheless, they’ve all been fun to make and delicious!
I’ve noticed that many of my clients who are in the maintenance phase of our program, hesitate when it comes to making shakes because theyr’e not sure of what to put in them. But, truly the beauty of shakes is their ease! Just load your blender up with 3-6 different items (including ice) and let the machine do the work! It’s so liberating! LOL
Here’s a recipe for what I call the “Shake What Yo Mama Gave You” shake that is fun & refreshing.
“Shake What Yo Mama Gave You” Recipe
Juice of 2 oranges
1 banana
1 apple (with or without skin)
few chunks of pineapple
few chunks of watermelon (or cantaloupe)
few slices of mango
1 squeezed lime
ice cubes
Add to blender and whirr away! If you end up making too much, just freeze the rest for a yummy treat later.
If you want to make this more of a meal, add some protein or hemp powder, or 1 tsp of your favorite nut butter. You can also add healthy fat by adding 1/4-1/2 tsp coconut oil or a couple slices of avocado. (Also, rather than adding more to the shake, you can can add protein by snacking on a few almonds or sunflower seeds which will satisfy your chewing and protein needs.)
If you have your own shake recipe that you would like to share, please be sure to send it my way. I would love to feature you and your recipe on my blog!
Here’s to your health!
