Most folks believe in the formula, eat less and workout more. I believe that is an important part to losing weight, but let’s not forget about the mind/body aspect.
Studies have shown that lack of sleep and a stressful lifestyle can make your body hang onto some extra pounds. We need to also consider this along with calories consumed and calories burned when we are talking about weight loss.
There are lots of activities to help you relieve stress that will also get you in shape at the same time. The most obvious to me is a yoga class. You are reminded to “center yourself” and to really listen to what your body is telling you. I also love the rest period before class is over to reflect on your good work that day and to just shut your brain down.
Another great activity to relieve some stress is spinning. When I am not teaching spinning, but am a participant, I find myself “zoning out” and really focusing on my physical work and nothing else. Grocery lists and calendars are the last things on my mind and it allows me to focus in on one task – surviving the hour! It clears my head and I always feel accomplished afterwards.
Simple things like taking a walk, going for a swim, or maybe a bike ride are also great ways to clear your mind, reduce some stress, and to get fit in the meantime.
