The best 6 weeks of summer are finally here! It is track season! You probably know my theory of, “work hard, play hard”, and that applies at the track also. There are so many different options for you once you get inside. You can bring your own food and drinks, you can buy from all sorts of vendors, you can eat in the restaurants, or, you can not eat or drink at all (if this is you, stop reading).
Best Bets:
WATER! You can bring your own, so long as it is not a glass container. I like bringing the big bottles of Smart Water. It will keep your tummy full and keep your body hydrated, especially if you are indulging in a few cocktails at the track.
BYOB! Bring your own snacks, drinks, and/or lunch. You know exactly how you prepared it and you know you can save yourself a few calories. I like to pack watermelon cubes, a Lara bar (I love the carrot cake variety), hummus and veggies, and whatever will keep me full and happy. It is much easier to pass by the ice cream stands if you are satisfied and not craving sugar.
Restaurant Row! This could be like picking the winning horse, or the dud depending on what you choose. Just like any other meal, veggies and fruits should take up the most “space” on your plate, followed by lean protein and lastly, some carbs. I have seen really nice wraps that have tons of veggies, protein in a light vinaigrette that would be a great option.
Losing Bets:
Sugar! You have heard it a million times – sugar is addictive! Starting your morning off with a sugary, fruity drink can put you in a tailspin for the entire day. The next thing you know, you are in a bee-line to the ice cream stand. Avoid all of that and have some of that delicious water melon that you packed in your cooler.
Fried Foods! Let’s be honest, do you really want french fries when it is 90 degrees out? Nah, that is probably just a habit that we need to break. Instead, bring your own pita or whole grain chips. That might satisfy your need for some carbs and salt.
A little bit of this, a little bit of that! My husband gets me into trouble with this all the time. He will try several things at the track and I always have to take a bit…or two! That won’t get you into too much trouble, unless you do it as many times as I do! Try to be mindful of everything you are eating, those calories can add up quickly.
With all that being said, “work hard, play hard” and enjoy your life. My only advice is to make sure whatever you are eating or drinking is worth it and to remember to MOVE the next day. Good luck!
