Who tested these hair straightening products?
Oregon OSHA (health and safety program), Health Canada
and the European Directorate-General of Health and
Consumer Affairs did the testing and found formaldehyde
in most of the products they tested. They also conducted air
tests during application of one of the products in two salons
and found that formaldehyde had been released into the air.

About a year and a half ago (8/10) I posted about Farouk Shami Founder of Farouk Systems being the first person to developed 100% ammonia free hair color called Sun Glitz. That was over 25 years ago!

As stylists we have the power to make a person feel better with the right cut, color, etc... As salon owners we have the power to make a change. Since opening in 2003 Brooklyn Attitude has been on the forefront of fund raisers and have support many causes. Now it's time to help out our local animal shelters with "Hugs for Whiskas"

"Hugs for Whiskas"

Starting Valentine's Day drop off at Brooklyn Attitude Hair & Body; cat food, dog food, pet toys, treats and/or litter valued at $10.00 or more and a stylist will apply 1 Hair Treats, Double Loop, Red Hair Extension. All collected goods will be distributed to our local animal shelters.

As a pet owner (12 cats and 1 dog) MaryAnn is always thinking of ways to help in pet adoption. After reading about animal shelters struggling for funds and an overabundance of cats and dogs she came up with her idea. She hopes to collect over $2000.00 worth of goods and hopes to take "Hugs for Whiskas" to the national level next year.

MaryAnn has teamed up BackStage Commerce. BackStage Commerce will be the official Hair Extensions sponsor of "Hugs for Whiskas" they have donated 200 Red Extensions.

Question: "My hair is really dry this winter. Could you write something about how to maintain hair and keep is healthy."
Thank you for the question. Hair feeling and looking dry is a common winter concern. I would also add static hair to the list.
My response is broad because there are different hair textures and coloring/highlighting also play a factor.
First step is shampoo. I recommend some type of moisturizing shampoo. As soon as you enter your shower wet your hair with tepid water (not to hot) and then shampoo. Rinse well and try to remove as much moisture from your hair. In our salon we usually towel dry some and then apply conditioner, this will help. Leave the conditioner in while washing and then rinse well. If you can stand the water a little colder it is highly recommended.
After leaving your shower towel dry your hair. Then apply some type of moisture product. Their are many products out there we recommend and use CHI, Silk Infusion.
At this point is where many cause more damage to their hair. I recommend using your hair dyer (one that produces moist heat) and hand dry your hair 70 to 80%. Then use your brush and dryer to style your hair. Again I recommended a quality brush with either ceramic barrel and bristles or some kind of brush made with materials that won't burn your hair. Afterwards you can spray or mist your hair with some kind of silk or shine product.

Every client has a choice as well as every salon. The importance of the salons choice should be to maintain the integrity of hair when using color, styling tools and products. This is what we believe makes the difference between good hair and great hair.

Each year in our profession hair color, tools and products get better and better. Now more than ever companies are manufacturing dryers that produce moist heat instead of just hot hair. Styling irons are including protective barriers in their pads, rods, etc... And, now companies are following the lead of Farouk Systems (CHI) in offering Ammonia Free Hair Color.

Komen Passionately Pink for the Cure that supports life-saving research, education, screenings and treatment programs in the fight to end breast cancer FOREVER.

Each year we are reminded that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For many they don't need a reminder because each year, day, hour, minute and second someone is affected by this disease. As beauty maker's we take great pride in the power that we have to change a person's self-esteem on October 11 we are hoping to change a person's life.

Now usually we are on the forefront of offering our salon services to help great causes but this time we are following the lead of our good friend and fellow hair stylist Edward J. Oberle Lopez. Edward has arranged cut-a-thons for Susan G. Komen for the Cure since 1985. Like many he knows firsthand that cancer sucks! A few years ago his mom was diagnosed with the disease. I am happy to inform you that after a year and a half of radiation and chemo therapy Edward's mom is a survivor. "Susan G. Komen offered tremendous emotional support for my mom as well as my family" Edward said.

So, instead of sitting home and wondering how can I help those in need? Stop by our salon and help us in making a difference!

How many sit and watch TV shopping network shows and think; do these hair care products really work? Regularly seen on QVC are products and Rollers from a company called Calista Tools. Calista Tools founders Donald Moore and Maria McCool are friends of ours. Their signature salon Calista Grand Salon & Spa can be found in West Chester, Pa. I met Donald & Maria a few years back before they launched "TOOLS". Through their research and development they created some great products. One of my favorites is EXPAND Texture Powder. It is in powder form and you sprinkle it close to your scalp. It will help you create great volume, excellent for back combing/teasing and the style will last.

A Red Hot Summer

Finding Your Salon Idol

For the past ten years American Idol has found some of the best new male and female talent to entertain us. There is a process; compete locally and then nationally. If you get noticed and have potential you can climb the ladder to become the next American Idol.

Is there a similarity to the American Idol competition and what top salons are looking for in hiring their stylists, a big YES!

Usually it goes something like this: Round One; The Resume. Round Two; The Face to Face Interview. So far so good! On to Round Three; Bringing in a model or two. This is where many of the stylists drop out on their own. For some reason they don't expect this challenge. Final Round: Hopefully this is where they will here Ryan Seacrest in their minds saying: dim the lights, drum role please: The next Salon Idol is...

So my recommendation to you you is find that salon that has a hiring process, a training program and/or assistants. There are to many salons out there that will hire anyone as long as they have a license. You deserve better!

Finding an ECO Friendly Salon

So my challenge to you is search the internet on the health risks and damage of:

Formaldehyde/Aldehyde in Brazilian Blowouts, Ammonia in hair color, High EMF's in Blow Dryers, Parabens, Phosphates, Sulfates or DEA in hair care products. You'll be shocked at what you'll find.

Finding the Pawfect Salon

Sometimes what may attract you to finding the right salon is one that is proactive in their community an example; Brooklyn Attitude Salon is Pawfect!

Brooklyn Attitude Hair & Body known as One of the Top Hot 100 Salons in America is also known for their love of animals. MaryAnn and Glenn have 11 cats and 1 dog. Many of their cats have been rescued by MaryAnn from alley-ways in Brooklyn.

Just recently MaryAnn rescued a mother cat and her kitten (see photo) from behind her salon. She brought the cats to Upstate Animal Medical Center where she noticed several cats and kittens up for adoption.

After speaking with Veterinarian Joy Lucas and her staff it seems that they are not adopting out as fast as the cats and kittens are coming in.

So MaryAnn decided to take action:

1) From now till Valentines Day, 2011 adopt a cat/kitten from Upstate Animal Medical

Center

2) Cats/Kitten must be up to date with their shots by Veterinarian Joy Lucas

3) Cats/Kitten must be Spayed or Neutered by Veterinarian Joy Lucas

4) Cat/Kitten owner must bring in a picture with their adopted Cat/Kitten, a Certificate of

Vaccinations and a Certificate of Spayed/Neutered from Upstate Animal Medical

Center; And, Cat/Kitten Owner/One Person will receive a $100.00 Gift Certificate.

Gift Certificate can only be used on services preformed by MaryAnn or Glenn at
