5 Days, 5 Must-See Hotspots for the Arts in Saratoga Springs
Saratoga Springs is a center for arts & culture in the Capital Region. Whether you are attending classical performances at SPAC during the summer or taking in an avant garde exhibit at the Tang year-round, there's always something amazing happening on the Saratoga arts scene. We have some of the best performing arts venues for live music and theater, art galleries, and museums north of NYC.
Our challenge to you is to spend 5 days exploring these 5 must-see hotspots for the arts in Saratoga. You won't regret it! (Plus, a bonus hotspot if you want to keep the fun going and make it six!)
Editor's Note 4/28/20: Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the Tang Teaching Museum will remain closed for the 2020 summer season. This also means annual events like Frances Day, the Community Open House, and UpBeat On The Roof will not take place in 2020. These annual events will return in 2021. The Museum plans to re-open in time for its fall exhibitions to begin in October 2020.
Located on the Skidmore College Campus, the Tang Teaching Museum is a totally unique and dynamic museum/art gallery. Featuring interdisciplinary exhibits that explore intersections between visual and performing arts and other disciplines, including the humanities and even the sciences, the Tang is dedicated to exploring the richness and diversity of the human experience through art. The museum galleries are regularly used as both teaching and exhibit spaces, and feature programming from famous contemporary artists as well as students at the college.
Ah, SPAC. This magical outdoor amphitheater in the heart of Saratoga Spa State Park is a must-visit year-round (hear us out). During the summer months, SPAC is home to both a classical season (featuring residencies by the NYC Ballet and Philadelphia Orchestra) and popular summer concert series that attracts big names like Dave Matthews Band, Miranda Lambert, and more! During the fall, winter, and spring, you can walk through the grounds and imagine what it would be like to look out on the crowds of people in the ampitheater and on the lawns from the pit or the stage.
Interested in pottery? You'll love the Saratoga Clay Arts Center. You can take a class, explore the gallery, or sign your kids up for a fun summer arts camp! Keep your eye out for the annual Chili Bowl Fundraiser in the winter, where you fill the bowl, eat the chili, and then KEEP the handmade bowl.
This non-profit theater company makes their home in the Spa Little Theater and puts on four shows between October and May, in addition to a special December "Theater for Families" production. The HMT is a vital link between the community and the performing arts during the winter months while SPAC is quiet, and also offers acting classes for children, teens, and adults.
Saratoga Arts is a local arts center and council dedicated to cultivating a vibrant arts community in Saratoga. Their exhibitions, gallery, grant programs, education programs, and annual events all contribute to this vision and mission. We recommend stopping into their gallery on Broadway before you hit the shops to get inspired!
About 25 minutes north of Saratoga Springs, the Hyde Collection is one of the best collections of fine and modern art north of NYC. Located in the historic mansion, Hyde House in Glens Falls, NY, the Hyde features both rotating exhibits and an astounding permanent collection endowed by the Hydes.
