Healthy Gut, Happy Body
Our intestinal tract profoundly impacts our overall wellness through its various functions, along with its well-known role in nutrient assimilation, absorption, and elimination. Recently, we’ve been exploring the importance of a healthy digestive system and the bugs that reside in our “inner tube.” We’ve also been highlighting how essential oils support optimal digestion.
Our Buggy Belly
Our bellies house trillions of microbes, collectively known as the gut microbiome. These teeny buggers synthesize metabolites and neurochemicals that impact the physiology of our organs (e.g. the liver, thyroid, lungs, etc.). They also have an established bi-directional communication to the brain via the gut-brain axis. Specifically, our microbiome sends their signaling molecules up to our cranium by way of our vagus nerve.
Due to the far-reaching health effects our gut, it is imperative to consider our gastrointestinal (GI) tract when addressing any illness or disease condition. One of my favorite natural ways to enhance our “inner tube” is by using essential oils.
Essential Oils and Digestion
Our aromatic allies possess many biochemical properties that support digestive function. They can also help to boost our microbiome, balance our emotional health, and calm stress in the gut and brain (via the gut-brain axis). Some essential oils can additionally act as vagus nerve modulators which stimulates the “rest and digest” division of our nervous system. These oils include lavender, bergamot, ylang ylang, and the Parasympathetic® blend.
