Recently, I reviewed the controversies about cleansing and detox among health professionals. This included the use of strategies to reduce the risks from chemical exposures in our environment and consumer products.
Due to the pervasiveness of detrimental substances in our world, I feel it is advisable to mitigate the harms that result from them. This can be accomplished by offering holistic support for the elimination of toxins and taking steps to prevent their further accumulation.
Yet in attempts to assist with “purifying the body,” many integrative medicine practitioners do not consider the unintentional, negative consequences that can occur. These include:
- Economic strains and accessibility
- The promotion of food morality and healthism
- Fueling disordered eating
In my latest video blog, I dive more into one of these pitfalls. Specifically, I discuss how mixing diet culture messages within detoxifying protocols can lead to serious mental health ramifications.
Topics include:
- How diet culture damages our relationship to our bodies and food
- How purifying our life can lead to an unhealthy preoccupation with “clean” eating
- How an obsession with dietary cleanliness can result in a deadly mental health disorder
- “Food addiction” and “pure” eating
- Is it possible to be healthy in a toxic world without giving into diet culture?
