Despite a miserable, rainy first day, rowers set their strokes on a
fish-head medal at the Head of the Fish Regatta, hosted by Saratoga
Rowing Association.
The regatta began on Saturday and continued through Sunday, October 25, bringing rowers from across the Northeast to Saratoga's Fish Creek. This year's race topped participation from previous years, with 1,571 teams over 4,500 rowers, and over 90 events.
Saturday's events brought high school and novice teams to the creek, while Sunday's 30 events challenged college and masters teams. Rowers of all ages and levels completed the 2,000 meter sprint, vying for a medal. Event winners were presented with a unique mounted fish head "trophy," which is one of the Regatta's famous traditions.
Area rowers frequented the "winner's circle" throughout the two-day regatta. Among the local winners were the Skidmore Women's Eight rowers and coxswain, who snatched the gold medal and a fish head trophy, with a time of 12:25.
Other area gold medals include a handful of Saratoga Rowing Association rowers: Women's Open Double, 14:19:81; Men's Junior Freshmen Eight, 11:19:37; Women's Junior Freshmen Eight, 12:23:50; Men's Junior Freshmen/Novice Single, 13:24:12; Women's Recreation Single, 16:22:35; Women's Alden Single, 21:46:68; Women's Junior Eight, 11:32:62; Women's Junior 2V Eights, 11:48:73; Women's Junior 3V Eights, 12:20:90; Women's Junior 4V Eights, 13:04:50; Men's Junior Modified Eight, 13:41:48; Women's Junior Modified Quad, 13:40:02; Women's Junior Freshmen/Novice Four, 13:20: 21; Women's Masters Lightweight Final, 15:06:73; Women's Masters Eight (2nd Boat) Final, 14:19:99.
