To some people, their work is just something to do to pay the bills. To others, it is their life's passion and reason to exist. For Dr. Gerald Benjamin, the "art" of dentistry is his life.
Specializing in general, esthetic, cosmetic and restorative dentistry,
Benjamin has patients who travel from as far away as Buffalo and Boston
to take advantage of his professionalism and expertise.
"I've always had an esthetic eye. My other hobby is photography, so I'm always thinking how things should look and ways to make them look better," he said. "This is what I do; my passion; what I'm good at."
While Benjamin and his staff practice general dentistry, his main focus is esthetics.
"Esthetic dentistry is really just fine dentistry. When you do everything right, the result is fine, beautiful looking teeth."
Benjamin realized at the age of nine that this was the career path he wanted to pursue. He grew up in Queens, NY and always had bad teeth. He had spent more time at the dentist than any other doctor, he said. Today, Benjamin's smile represents everything his practice stands for: perfection.
Benjamin and his staff can transform patients' teeth from rotten or broken to looking like nothing was ever wrong with them in the first place. Patients come for different reasons as well. Some people have had an accident that chipped their front teeth. Others have rotting teeth or gum tissue problems that make one's smile unattractive. Either scenario, Benjamin has extensive consults with each patient to form an individualized treatment plan.
"Looking and feeling great often leads to higher self-esteem, confidence and positive relational skills," he said. "The appearance and expression of one's face often invites a lasting impression."
Benjamin received his doctorate from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1977 and in 2001 he received the Certificate of Proficiency Esthetic Dentistry from SUNY Buffalo as well. He achieved Master Level Proficiency under the direction of Dr. Frank Spear at the Seattle Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, where Benjamin is now a professor. He is also a faculty member in the Department of Restorative Dentistry and has served on the Dean's Advisory Committee at SUNY Buffalo.
Patient Natalie Conover said she found Dr. Benjamin after a long search for the right person to fix her teeth.
"When I was younger, I had good teeth, but over time they got tight and crooked," Conover said. "Dr. Benjamin saved my life. These teeth feel so right, like they have been mine all along."
According to Benjamin, about 80 percent of dentists are the same and if a patient really has specific needs, they need to seek out the dentists in the top 15 percent of the profession. He likens high-end dentistry to purchasing a high-class car.
"A Ferrari isn't for everyone, but the company sells every car they make. There is a market out there for the people that want the Ferrari. There is a market out there for people who just want a nicer smile," he said.
Currently Benjamin is phasing out his office in Troy and will be working full-time in his Division Street office.
