State Has $4.2 Million Available To Train Workers On Best Ways To Reduce Energy Use

Posted onFebruary 3, 2017February 3, 2017

New York state has made $4.2 million available to support programs providing training to building operations and maintenance workers on best practices to reduce energy use and energy bills in buildings across the state.

The funding will advance the state’s goal to transition to 50 percent renewables by 2030 and reduce energy use in buildings by 23 percent over 1990 levels, officials said.

“This training is a win-win that will help businesses lower operating costs, reduce energy use and help New York fight climate change,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. “With this funding, we are taking one more step toward a cleaner, greener and more sustainable New York for all.”

He said the funding is part of a broader statewide effort under the Clean Energy Fund to offer customized technical assistance to increase energy efficiency and drive greater use of renewable energy resources in commercial, industrial, multifamily and institutional buildings, and schools. This training will help advance the state’s clean energy efforts because as energy use is reduced in buildings, fewer renewable energy resources will be needed to reach the 50 percent renewables goal.

Upstate New York, football season and wings. It’s a winning combination that the new Wings Over Saratoga owners counted on.

Joe Hill and his son, Tanner, have been running the wing restaurant for over a month and Hill said they are excited about the initial response.

“Thing are going really well. Of course it’s football season, so with wings and football, you can’t go wrong,” said Hill about the weeks leading through the Super Bowl.

Hill said Tanner worked with the previous owner for 10 years as assistant manger and when they were ready to go into a different direction and sell the business, they looked to his son.

Hill said he went into business with his son after working in the building trade sector for over 30 years. He was considering different business options, but eventually felt that working with his son would be a positive experience.

Bipartisan Effort Of State Officials Brings In $170M For Improving Broadband For Upstate

Posted onFebruary 3, 2017February 3, 2017

More than $170 million in federal funds that could have been sent to other states will be returned to Upstate New York to expand broadband and high speed internet service, state officials announced on Jan. 27.

The bipartisan effort was announced by  Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, U.S. Sen. Charles E. Schumer, and Rep. Chris Collins.

“This is huge news for rural communities all across Upstate New York. From the very beginning, I was very clear with the FCC that this $170 million belongs strictly to New York and should be kept here,” said Schumer.  “The federal government’s job should be to invest not divest in Upstate New York’s internet access.”

He said other broadband companies in Upstate New York “will now have the opportunity to work with the state in order to bid on this funding to improve Upstate’s broadband access.  As long as I’m Senator, I will never let New Yorkers access to broadband suffer just because one carrier chose not to invest in New York.”

“Access to rural broadband is crucial for Western New Yorkers,” said Collins. “We have tirelessly fought to keep this money in New York State and I am excited for Western New Yorkers that the FCC listened. This money is a critical investment in New York’s future.”

Officials said several telecommunications companies are using federal investment from the Connect America Fund to expand broadband Upstate, but one national carrier did not accept the money it was allocated. The Federal Communications Commission wanted to take this unused money from New York and bid it out nationally.

When we “make the draft” to join a new business team we are pumped up right out of the gate. The rush of mastering new job skills, learning the needs and wants of your teammates, and throwing your ideas in the ring are very energizing …  at least in the first quarter.

As time goes on, we settle into a routine and operate at a steady pace or, in the worst-case scenario, play a critic from the sidelines. Normal game changers, like having to perform tasks not on your job description, tolerating an irritating coworker or dealing with economic ups and downs, deflates our drive in no time.

It’s in every employer’s best interest to make sure their team stays on track and each member is in a position that best fits their skills. It’s the captain’s job to make sure no one sits on the bench and everyone focuses on the same game plan.

Keeping your group driven requires ingenuity and diligence. However, budget restraints and day-to-day business demands can often get in the way of a consistent team-building program. Team exercises can be as ambitious as a full-day golf outing or as small as interoffice games that engage departments or individuals in problem solving, communication and collaboration.

As is often quoted “Our new Constitution is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” (Benjamin Franklin, 1789)

With that said, this year is certainly no different. The uncertain part is of course how much if at all our taxes will change this year with a new administration.

President Trump has discussed some new personal tax rates. His suggested tax rates and breakpoints for married-joint filers would be: Less than $75,000, 12 percent; more than $75,000 but less than $225,000, 25 percent; and more than $225,000, 33 percent. Brackets for single filers would be half of these amounts. These three rate brackets would replace our current seven rate brackets which go as high as 39.6 percent.

In addition to the changes in rates he has also called for some other drastic changes including, but not limited to: the Affordable Care Act, 3.8 percent tax on investment income would be repealed; the alternative minimum tax (AMT) would be repealed; the standard deduction for joint filers would increase to $30,000 and the standard deduction for single filers would be $15,000; Personal exemptions would be eliminated; head-of-household filing status would be eliminated; itemized deductions would be capped at $200,000 for married-joint filers and $100,000 for a single filer; standard corporate tax rate would be reduced to 15 percent from the current 35 percent.
