Three years ago this month Theresa Skaine opened Skaine & Associates LLC, a law practice serving clients in the corporate arena, commercial real estate and the nonprofit sector.

Skaine had been in practice for more than 20 years and a partner with Lemery Greisler LLC when she decided that at this time in her life, flexibility was a stronger objective than the security of a medium-sized firm.

With a daughter in high school and a son in college, Skaine wanted to be more flexible with her schedule to be more present with her children, she said.

“My biggest challenge has been depending on myself for everything. It can be a struggle to figure things out without my support staff,” said Skaine. “The issues I face are not about being a woman in business, but more about the firm being small.”

These first years on her own have helped Skaine gain an appreciation for what she will have in the future as she builds up her associates and grows the practice, she said.

MWBE Program Ready To Expand In NY State

Posted onMarch 9, 2018March 9, 2018

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has announced legislation to reauthorize and to expand the MWBE program to more contracts entirely funded by the state.

The proposed legislative changes and expansion to include all state-funded contracts would leverage the largest pool of state funding in history to combat systemic discrimination and create new opportunities for MWBE participation at every level, according to Cuomo.

Since 2011, state-certified MWBEs have won more than $10.4 billion in state contracts and the state has certified more than 6,600 MWBEs and re-certified more than 4,700 MWBEs.

“In New York, we know that our economy is strongest when everyone is empowered to participate, which is why we continue to work to increase access and opportunities to success for minority and women owned businesses to strengthen and diversify our economy,” Cuomo said. “These actions will break down barriers to success and empower these business owners to help fuel our economy and move this great state forward.”

The WJ Grande Industrial Park continues to be an economic driver in the region nearly 70 years after it was first developed by its namesake, William J. Grande.

In the early 1950s, Grande purchased approximately 550 acres on Cady Hill in Saratoga Springs, adjacent to the D&H Railroad. The lifelong developer and philanthropist envisioned Cady Hill Research and Industrial Park, as it was originally named, as a vehicle for creating sustainable employment locally, as well as creating a revenue base for the county.

Grande’s acquisition proved to be as beneficial for the region as he had envisioned, with a succession of businesses moving into the park over the course of several decades.

General Foods was the first company to locate in the park in 1959. They employed over 200 people for more than three decades. During the 1960s and 1970s, several small regional companies located in the park, and in the 1980s Guyson, American Tissue, Quad Graphics and Ball Corp. became tenants of the park. Ball, Quad and Guyson are still fully operational and have steadily employed more than 1,500 people since they located there.
