Brookside Museum Opens Artisans Market in Ballston Spa; Artists Open Boutique In Malta

The 16th annual Artisans Market at Brookside
Museum in Ballston Spa will run through
Dec. 23.

The market is open Tuesday through Friday
from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from
11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Evening hours will be announced
in December.

The Artisans Market features handmade
items from Leanna’s Designs, Saratoga Notecards,
Sundae’s Best Hot Fudge, Cobble
Hill Farms Apothecary, Adam Cielinski
woodworking, Studio in the Pines, Mohawk

Stewart's Holiday Match Program To Again Raise Funds For Youth-Oriented Local Charities

Stewart’s Shops has started its Holiday Match
program, which raises funds for local charities.

“Stewart’s Holiday Match makes it so easy
to give to charities located right in your own
community. Our customers wow us with their
generosity year after year,” said Stewart’s Shops
President Gary Dake.

Stewart’s Shops kicked off its Holiday Match
season with excitement, following a record
breaking program in 2014. Last year, customers
donated more than $770,000, which was
doubled to more than $1.5 million with the
Stewart’s match.

The money was used to support a record
1,600 organizations directly within the communities
where Stewart’s Shops are located.

New Quarter Unveiled By U.S. Mint Honors British Surrender In Saratoga To Gen. Gates

The new quarter depicts a close-up of the moment British Gen. John Burgoyne surrendered his
sword to American Gen. Horatio Gates, considered a turning point in the American Revolution.

The U.S. Mint joined the National Park
Service on Nov. 17 to launch the Saratoga
National Historical Park quarter.

The quarter’s reverse (tails side) depicts
a close-up of the moment British Gen. John
Burgoyne surrendered his sword to American
Gen. Horatio Gates, a turning point many believe
marked the ‘beginning of the end of the
American Revolutionary War.’ Inscriptions
are “British Surrender 1777,” “Saratoga,” “New
York,” “2015,” and “E Pluribus Unum.”

“This new coin honors the patriots who
fought so bravely to defend our fledgling nation
and whose victory forever changed the
face of the world,” said Mint Acting Quality
Manager Ron Harrigal.

Hundreds of schoolchildren were on hand,
with several of them participating in the ceremony
which was live-streamed to the public.
Additional event participants included Mint
Artistic Infusion Program artist Barbara Fox,
designer of the coin’s reverse side; Saratoga
National Historical Park Superintendent Amy
Bracewell; park ranger and historian Eric
Schnitzer; and Matt Scollin, regional director
for U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik.

SUNY Adirondack Gets $9.7 Million Grant To Build Center To Train The Region's Workforce

SUNY Adirondack will be the recipient of
a $9.7 million grant enabling it to build the
Adirondack Regional Workforce Readiness
Center that will house extensive applied learning
and training initiatives to help prepare
the Capital Region’s workforce for the jobs of
the future.

The grant announced by the state is part of
the fourth round of NYSUNY 2020 Challenge
grants.

“As upstate New York’s economy continues
grow, we must ensure that our workforce has
the skills and training needed to fulfill the jobs
created by new and emerging industries,” Gov.
Andrew Cuomo said. “This grant will allow
SUNY Adirondack to build a state-of-theart
facility that ensures workers receive the
training they need, so that new businesses are
assured of a quality workforce.”

It will be built on the Queensbury campus.

City Officials To Review Parking Concerns, Traffic Before Decision On High Rock Site

Saratoga Springs city officials plan to review two expansive, multimillion dollar projects that would–if eventually approved by the city–result in a combination of shops, apartments and parking spaces on the city-owned land along High Rock, Maple and Lake avenues.

Representatives of two development groups gave presentations on Nov. 10 at a special City Council meeting. The projects differ, but both specify parking spaces for Saratoga City Center, the general public and residents who would occupy the proposed housing.

Parking is deemed by the city as the key segment of any project that comes to fruition on the property, especially a large portion for City Center.

Paramount Realty Group LLC in Syracuse presented its $77 million proposal. Hyman Hemispheric LLC of Voorheesville also outlined its ideas, without giving a cost estimate. Though Jeff Hyman of Hyman Hemispheric previously stated his plan is in the area of $82 million.

Mayor Joanne Yepsen is assembling, in short order, a technical review committee to assess the proposals. She also said a parking task force will look at overall needs of the downtown area. The flow of traffic and how it would be affected by a major downtown residential-business complex will also be examined.

Solar-Powered Tugboat Makes Trip On Erie Canal Without Fuel, Delivers Local Products

On Oct. 13, Solar Sal, the award-winning
solar powered vessel honored as “best in show”
at the recent Waterford Tugboat Roundup,
became the first-ever boat to traverse the Erie
Canal and deliver a cargo without using a drop
of fossil fuels.

The Chamber of Southern Saratoga County
(CSSC) and several of its member manufacturing
companies were major supporters of the
trip. Quebec-based Cascades, Inc., which owns
tissue manufacturing plants in Mechanicville and Waterford, assisted in the operations, which involved loading six bales (8,000 pounds) of
recycled cardboard from Cascades Recovery’s
Depew, N.Y. facility aboard the boat in Lockport,
then traveling the roughly 320 miles to
Mechanicville for unloading near Cascades
Tissue Group’s local plant.

Hullspeed Coatings of Saratoga Springs,
which applied its signature product to the
vessel’s bottom before its spring launching, also assisted in the journey, with marketing
manager Ian Germain present for both loading
and unloading of the cargo.

Butler-Binley, of Bolton Landing, has a
20-plus year track record of building brands.
