Timber Frame Building
As the saying goes, "Everything old is new again." In the case of timber frame building, modern day craftsmen combine time-honored traditions with cutting edge technology. The result is a structure that is beautiful, "green", and that will last for many generations.
Timber frames have been around for a few thousand years. Long before nails or bolts were invented, traditional joinery such as dove-tail, scarf, and mortise and tenon, secured with wooden pegs, were the only way to join timbers together in buildings. For centuries, craftsmen took great pride in fitting together massive timbers so skillfully that they continue to inspire a "Wow, how'd they do that?" admiration for structures that are still standing and in use six, seven and even eight hundred years after they were built.
Today, in new timber frames, that same high quality, centuries-old craftsmanship is available to modern homeowners, builders and architects. New timber frames are easily combined with technologically advanced building materials such as "Low E" windows, Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), and alternative energy sources.
For sheer versatility timber frames are hard to beat. Virtually any style home-cape, ranch, colonial, chalet or bungalow-can be done in a timber frame. A full timber frame is self-supporting and requires no interior bearing walls, so there is greater freedom of interior design than in conventional framing. This allows for spacious, " open", floor plans.
Timber frames are a great option for residential, light commercial and agricultural structures, home additions, entry ways and porches, or pergolas and gazebos. And "hybrids", which combine timber frame elements with other framing systems, are becoming increasingly popular. To add timber frame style and beauty to a new or existing structure, decorative or structural trusses can create a dramatic effect for any space.
