Fitness is key to living a happy, healthy lifestyle, and one of the best ways to stay fit is by setting goals for yourself. To promote health and fitness for all and raise funds for continued building renovations, The Wesley Community is presenting Share a Step for Seniors 2019. This initiative encourages people to create a fundraising and fitness-oriented goal based around walking, running, or biking.
What Is The Wesley Community?
Located in Saratoga Springs, NY, The Wesley Community is a non-profit health and housing services provider that offers a unique blend of high-quality community living and caregiving. They have served seniors in the region for over 45 years and empowered them to live independent and healthy lives.
The Wesley Community currently serves approximately 700 older adults, and their campus includes affordable independent senior housing and independent & assisted living apartments. The organization provides expert nursing, memory care, and senior home care services as well.
Walk, Run, Bike & Fundraise for a Good Cause
In 2018, The Wesley Community introduced a fundraising initiative called Share a Step for Seniors. Their aim was to promote fitness in people of all ages and ability levels, and have participants raise funds for the renovation of the Wesley Health Care Center's Resident Activities Room. Throughout June, individuals and teams worked toward accomplishing their walking, running, biking, and fundraising goals.
After the success of this community fundraiser during its first year, Share a Step for Seniors has returned in 2019 with a few changes.
Make Your Workouts Count During Share a Step for Seniors
Share a Step for Seniors 2019 will raise funds for renovations to the Wesley Health Care Center's Springs building, which provides a home for residents with the greatest clinical needs. The renovation project will result in an increased number of private rooms, brighter dining rooms, a welcoming atmosphere, ceiling lift track systems, and more additions and upgrades.
Fundraising for participating individuals and teams began on March 1, 2019, and will continue through June 15, 2019. During the week of June 6 - June 13, 2019, the total amount of walking, running, or biking you do will count toward your fitness goal.
Learn How to Get Started
To join, all you have to do is visit the Share a Step for Seniors 2019 website, set a fitness goal, and create a fundraising page to share with your social circles. You can challenge yourself to accomplish an individual goal or team up with a group of your friends, family, and coworkers to reach a collective goal.
Registration is free, and there is no fundraising requirement. However, if you'd like to be eligible for prizes, the minimum fundraising goal is $50 for individuals and $250 for teams. You're welcome to invite as many team members as you want, and participants who reach their fundraising goal will receive a Share A Step for Seniors Water Bottle (limit 5 bottles per team). All participants and any donations of any amount are sincerely appreciated.
Track Your Workouts & Walks
Once you've set up your account and personal fundraising page, you can add your workouts and walks manually, or link a fitness app, such as Strava, MyFitnessPal, or FitBit (workouts in your app must be marked as public). Although workouts will only count toward your fitness goal from June 6 - June 13, apps can be linked in advance.
Keep Yourself Motivated by Attending Special Events
The official kickoff event for Share a Step for Seniors 2019 is an opening celebration at Pitney Meadows Community Farm on Thursday, June 6, from 5:00pm-6:30pm. Stop by and get your first mile in with a trip around the beautiful farm, and then stay for live music and delicious food. It's a great chance to meet other participants and ask questions about registration. Best of all, you'll receive a free Share a Step t-shirt while supplies last.
Then, on Monday, June 10, there will be a walking meetup for anyone who would like to take a fun walk with a group. The exact details will be announced via email for everyone with an account and fundraising page.
The week of fitness tracking will conclude on Thursday, June 13, with a Wrap-Up Celebration at the Courtyard by Marriott in Saratoga Springs. From 4:30pm-6:00pm, The Wesley Community will announce the winners of the individual and team competitions, and participants can mix and mingle and celebrate reaching their goals.
