All around the world, the COVID-19 pandemic has introduced many difficulties for health care systems. Walk, Run, Bike & Fundraise for The Wesley Community's COVID-19 Relief Fund

In 2018, The Wesley Community kicked off a new fundraising initiative called Share a Step for Seniors. Their aim was to promote fitness in people of all ages and to raise funds in support of The Wesley Community's mission. Throughout June 2018, individuals and teams worked toward accomplishing their walking, running, biking, and fundraising goals.

Unfortunately, this year, the COVID-19 pandemic has created significant costs that have gone beyond Wesley's normal operating budget. In response to this, the health care provider has made changes to Share a Step for Seniors 2020. The week-long initiative will run from June 19-26 and benefit the COVID-19 relief fund to meet the unforseen challenges of this global pandemic.

Set a Goal and Make a Difference During Share a Step for Seniors

The Wesley Community designed Share a Step for Seniors 2020 as a fitness and fundraising initiative that you can complete virtually. During the week of June 19-26, the total amount of walking, running, or biking you do will count toward your fitness goal. You can run on a treadmill at home, take a bike ride around the local neighborhood, or even go for a hike on a nearby nature trail.

However, since we must continue to practice social distancing, The Wesley Community recommends that you walk, run, or bike close to home. This will help to keep yourself and others safe during this time.

How to Get Started

To join, all you have to do is visit the Share a Step for Seniors 2020 website, set a fundraising goal to share with your social circle, and create a fitness/mileage goal for the week of June 19-26. Challenge yourself to accomplish an individual goal or team up with a group of your friends, family, and coworkers to reach a collective goal.

All participants will receive a Share a Step goodie bag to help while they get their miles in! All participants who meet their mileage goals, as well as the minimum fundraising goals will qualify for additional prizes!

Please note that registration is free, and there is no fundraising requirement to participate. Even if you can't raise anything, please take part as a way to connect with The Wesley Community and show your support.

Track Your Workouts & Walks

Once you've set up your account and fundraising page, you can add your workouts and walks manually, or link a fitness app, such as Strava (workouts in your app must be marked as public). Although workouts will only count toward your fitness goal from June 19-26, apps can be linked in advance.

Wesley has also added some fun challenge tiers that you can work toward. Each challenge tier focuses on traveling the distance of (but not actually visiting) popular Adirondack trails, including:

  • Challenge Tier 1: Travel the distance of Wright Peak - a 7-mile hike up the mountain to a beautiful view of North Hudson, NY. 1 mile a day over the course of the 7-day Share a Step for Seniors will take you the distance of this mountain.
  • Challenge Tier 2: String together a trip up Mt. Emmons, Donaldson, and Seward peaks to reach 3 of the high peaks at once. Share a Step for Seniors runs for 7 days, so 2.6 miles a day will get you through this 18-mile trek, making a difference every step of the way.
  • Challenge Tier 3 (Sponsored by CDPHP): Take on this awesome challenge to travel the distance of the Saranac Lake 6er mountains. Crush this 37 mile goal by getting in 5.3 miles a day for the duration of Share a Step for Seniors. This is a great goal if you'd like to get those miles in on your bike, but don't be afraid to tackle this on foot instead.

To show your progress and encourage others, remember to take photos of your workouts and tag The Wesley Community on Facebook or Instagram with #shareastep and #SASChallenger
