How to Saratoga Chowderfest: Tips & Tricks You Need to Know
Editor’s Note: The following guide reflects details from the 2026 Saratoga Chowderfest. Check back next year for info regarding Chowderfest 2027!
The always popular Saratoga Chowderfest is returning on Saturday, February 7, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. With over 80 vendors and tens of thousands of people filling the streets, the event can be a whirlwind.
This guide breaks down the essential logistics and insider secrets to help you navigate the day with ease, from finding the best parking to choosing the right chowder strategy.
1. Understand the "Food-Walk" Format
Before you arrive, it is helpful to know that Chowderfest isn't a single-venue festival with a gate; it is a city-wide celebration that spans multiple blocks. Because the event is spread out, you are free to start and end your "chowder crawl" wherever you like.
- No Entry Fee: You don't need a ticket to attend Chowderfest.
- The $2 Rule: You simply walk from business to business. Most participants set up tables outside on Broadway and side streets, offering 4 oz. samples for just $2.
- Bring Cash: Cash is king. It keeps lines moving and ensures you can move from vendor to vendor as quickly as possible.
2. Master the 2026 Logistics & Parking
Managing transportation is the biggest hurdle for any Chowderfest attendee. For 2026, the city has expanded pedestrian access and shuttle services to accommodate the crowds. Planning your arrival for before 11:00 AM is highly recommended to secure a spot.
- Car-Free Broadway: For 2026, Broadway will be closed to vehicular traffic from Lake Avenue to Washington Avenue (10:00 AM – 4:30 PM).
- Free Park & Ride Shuttles: Avoid downtown gridlock! Four free shuttles will run from the Saratoga Casino Hotel to downtown between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
- The 600-Car Secret: If you must park downtown, the Saratoga Springs City Center parking garage offers over 600 spots, but it fills up fast!
- Rideshare Reality: Uber and Lyft are available, but expect higher surge pricing and traffic delays.

3. The "Big Names" vs. The "Hidden Gems"
The competition for the People’s Choice award is fierce, and the most famous local spots often draw the largest crowds. While the award-winning chowders are worth the wait, some of the best flavors can be found tucked away on side streets where the lines are much shorter.
- The Reality: Lines for previous "People's Choice" winners like Druthers or Jacob & Anthony's can be long as they serve 3,000+ bowls throughout the day.
- Insider Tip: If you want the winners, go there exactly at 11:00 AM. If lines look too long, pivot to side streets.
- Voting: Winners are chosen based on the number of bowls served. Vote for a participating location on the Discover Saratoga mobile app during Chowderfest, and you'll be entered to win $1,000 worth of gift cards to Saratoga area businesses and restaurants.
- To vote, open the Discover Saratoga mobile app and click Chowderfest. Click into Chowderfest 2026, select your favorite participant, and hit vote! Limited to one vote per person. You must create an account with a valid email address to participate. The Discover Saratoga mobile app is free to download on the App Store and Google Play.
4. Pro Gear & "Survival" Hacks
Experienced Chowderfest fans know that the right gear and etiquette make the day much more comfortable. These "unwritten rules" and hacks will keep you focused on the food and ensure a smooth experience for everyone involved.
- Bring a Lanyard: If you purchase the $5 souvenir spoon, a lanyard makes it easy to carry it around with you to each vendor!
- The Muffin Tin Hack: Bring a standard 6-cup muffin tin. It acts as a perfect caddy to carry multiple samples back to your group so you don't have to balance hot cups in your hands.
- Keep Fido at Home: Saratoga is a dog-friendly city, but due to the crowd density and ice/salt on the streets, the event is not very dog-friendly.
- Garbage Etiquette: Help keep Saratoga beautiful! Look for official garbage cans or ask vendors for their bins. Avoid leaving empty cups on window sills or planters.
- Download the Map: Cell service can get spotty due to the sheer number of people. Download a map beforehand and pick a specific landmark as a meeting spot for your friends.
5. Festival Activities & Heated Hubs
Chowderfest is a full-blown street festival with an electric atmosphere. While vendors line the streets, two major indoor hubs offer a break from the winter wind along with unique entertainment, merchandise, and family-friendly fun.
- Saratoga Hilton (Lower Lobby): This hub features the Saratoga Corinth & Hudson Railway model train, face painting by Miss Stacy and balloon art by Balloon Gal Jenny (11am–3pm), and the Franklin Community Center info table. It is also a primary merchandise spot from 10am–4pm for long-sleeve commemorative shirts ($20–$22), beanies ($15), and reusable spoons ($5). Please note that credit card transactions are subject to additional fees.
- Heritage Area Visitor Center: This location is typically buzzing with activity, featuring live music and info from the Mostly Modern Festival and a recruitment table for the NYS Troopers. Official merchandise is sold here from 10am–5pm on the day of the event, but you can also buy shirts early at this location from Tuesday, 2/3, through Friday, 2/6, between 10am and 4pm.
- Photo Ops & Radio Stations: Throughout downtown, keep an eye out for official photo-op backdrops, sponsor tables, and local radio stations broadcasting live from the heart of the event.
- Dress Warm & Layer: You will be standing in outdoor lines in February. Wear thermal socks and layers; remember, it may be freezing outside, but it will be very warm and crowded inside the bars.
6. Official Merch & Souvenirs
Part of the fun is taking home a piece of the festival. Official merchandise is usually high-quality and sells out quickly, so it is best to visit the merch stands early in the day.
- Long-sleeve T-shirts: $20 ($22 for XXL)
- Knit Beanies: $15
- Official Spoon: $5
- Pre-order: You can also purchase merch ahead of time: https://chowderfest26.itemorder.com/shop/home/
7. Post-Chowder Dinner Plans
Once the festival ends at 4:00 PM, the hunger for chowder might be gone, but the desire for a real seat and a full meal kicks in. Because thousands of people are looking for dinner at the same time, your post-event strategy is just as important as your festival plan.
- Downtown Reservations: Most Broadway restaurants book up weeks in advance. If you didn't snag a table early, don't worry!
- The "Quiet" Alternative: Book a table at a restaurant outside of downtown (Wilton, Malta, or the West Side). It will be significantly quieter, and you'll find it much easier to park.
- The Bar Shift: Bars are packed during the event but generally become more manageable by dinner time.
