The Dark Horse refers to the no name, unlikely champions who overcame the odds to rise to the top. Horses like Man o'War, Gallant Fox, and Secretariat were beat by "The Dark Horse." Gallant Fox lost to Jim Dandy who had 100-1 odds, Secretariat lost to a horse named Onion in the Whitney Stakes after winning the Triple Crown, and Upset, the most well-known Dark Horse, is the only horse who beat Man o'War. Upset rose to the top right here in Saratoga at the 1919 Sanford Stakes and is the official mascot of The Dark Horse Mercantile.
