Why are the Battles of Saratoga Called the Turning Point of the American Revolution?

To truly appreciate the Saratoga 250 celebrations, it helps to understand just how high the stakes were in the autumn of 1777. When the Continental Army—supported by local state militias, native allies, and hundreds of freed slaves—clashed with British General John Burgoyne's forces, the fate of the entire independence movement hung in the balance.

The resulting siege ended on October 17, 1777, marking the first time a British army surrendered in world history. This monumental victory completely altered the course of the war by convincing France to officially ally with the United States, providing the critical military backing needed to secure ultimate American freedom.

Today, the Campaign for Saratoga 250, Inc.—an official, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization—works to ensure that this profound legacy of bravery, unity, and democracy continues to inspire new generations across the globe.
